Song Story

"'For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'" Matthew 25:35-40 (ESV) I didn't write this song to condemn anyone but myself. I am self-centered. I am comfortable. Jesus was neither of these things. I needed a reminder that the people and places that I'm so quick to distance myself from are the very people and places that Jesus invested in - and dwells with even as I write these words. Oh, that I would love the "least of these"...and in so doing, love the One who first loved me. Trevor

Song Lyrics

Jesus rides the subway
With the junkies and the freaks
Jesus rides the subway
With the hustlers and the creeps
He rubs shoulders with the thieves
And he looks a lot like everyone he sees
Jesus rides the subway
While the pretty people sleep, and he says…

You can lay your burden down
You can lay your burden down
Oh, maybe you’ve been kicked around
But you can lay your burden down

Jesus strolls the sidewalks
On the wrong side of the tracks
Jesus strolls the sidewalks
That poverty attacks
He makes his home among the shacks
Where the fatherless have fallen through the cracks
Jesus strolls the sidewalks
While the righteous turn their backs, and he says…

You can lay your burden down
You can lay your burden down
Oh, maybe you’ve been kicked around
But you can lay your burden down

Jesus went to church on Sunday
Sat in the back and sang the hymns
Jesus went to church on Sunday
But they didn't recognize him, and he said...

You can lay your burden down
You can lay your burden down
Oh, maybe you’ve been kicked around
But you can lay your burden down

I really enjoyed the concert in Calgary I got a 3 tickets for my birthday and I took my younger sister we really enjoyed the concert and how good of a showman Matt is an also a person I got to meet him and shook his hand, being a musician and a christian third day were the first band that got me away from traditional rock and turned me on to music that I could praise Jesus and feel good about it as I was starting to feel guilty as a musician of not singing of the lord, bless you third day I hope to see you again.

Yes, Jesus is everywhere if we would only let Him be. It is our own self that limits Him! He is standing at the door of our hearts knocking to come in at all times! I hope in my life through songs and God's WORD, that I will open up that door and I pray this whole nation will open up that door to Jesus' love and salvation for us! Amen And Thank You! God bless you all richly and encamp HIs mighty angels about you all and cover you all in His precious soul-saving blood! Amen in Jesus' matchless name!

    @ Robert: Read Matthew 25:34-40

My understanding is that Trevor isn't implying that Jesus literally went to church on Sunday. Watch one of the YouTube videos where he sings the song live and he gives insight to the meaning. Specifically, "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."

The "least of these brothers and sisters" are the folks that ride the subway, walk the streets on the wrong side of the tracks, and yes, sit in the back and sing the hymns on Sunday at churches everywhere. The song addresses the problem that many folks within the church that perceive themselves as righteous (pretty people), look down on those - and avoid - people they see as "hustlers, creeps, and freaks" when we are called to love them and meet their earthy needs to show Christ's love.

    God bless!

Thank you for a great night! Trevor has a wonderful voice and I loved the Psalm 23 and Jesus Rides the Subway! I am so glad this one is posted! Can't wait to see a cd from him! The entire evening rocked! Tenth Avenue North kept me singing right along! Just love being able to praise God, sing of his Word and hear joyful music! We had to leave before the last encore song and we were three blocks away and could still hear the music! Fill VALPO with your song! With God's SONG! Thanks again to all you for coming to Valpo! The meat of this song is totally understood and appreciated, however I must point out one glaring mistake...Jesus never went to church on Sunday. I challenge anyone to show me in the Bible where Jesus went to church on Sunday. Sunday is never mentioned in the Bible. Jesus did however attend church every Sabbath as was His custom.
